Sherman County is a county located in the U.S. state of Nebraska. As of 2000, the population is 3,318. Its county seat is Loup City6. It was named after American Civil War Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman.

In the Nebraska license plate system, Sherman County is represented by the prefix 56 (it had the fifty-sixth-largest number of vehicles registered in the county when the license plate system was established in 1922).

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,481 km² (572 sq mi). 1,466 km² (566 sq mi) of it is land and 15 km² (6 sq mi) of it (1.01%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 3,318 people, 1,394 households, and 935 families residing in the county. The population density was 2/km² (6/sq mi). There were 1,839 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (3/sq mi). The racial makeup of the county was 98.49% White, 0.06% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 1.02% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,394 households out of which 27.60% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.20% were married couples living together, 5.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.90% were non-families. 30.40% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.70% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.91.

In the county the population was spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 4.50% from 18 to 24, 23.70% from 25 to 44, 24.10% from 45 to 64, and 23.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 97.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $28,646, and the median income for a family was $34,821. Males had a median income of $23,065 versus $17,269 for females. The per capita income for the county was $14,064. About 8.00% of families and 12.90% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.40% of those under age 18 and 12.80% of those age 65 or over.

Sherman County is one of the main Polish-American communities in the state and in the country. Americans of Polish ancestry are 29,6% of all population.
