Solomon Bates. Sr. was born 25 December 1702 in Scituate, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States to Joseph Bates (1653-1740) and Anna Silvester (1669-1742) and died 28 March 1787 Cohasset, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States of unspecified causes. He married Hannah Grover (1707-1774) 12 November 1729 in Wrentham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.

Residence in Cohasset

Lived on Broadway and built the house that was afterwards occupied by his son Solomon. Of this house, which was a curiosity in its way, is found the description in the Gospel Banner of Maine, from the pen of the Reverend George Bates, a descendant: "It was substantially built, mostly of oak timber and evidently by a ship carpenter. The walls were constructed of plank, grooved together and tree-nailed to the sills and plates. The posts were all kneed in the same manner that ships are kneed."
