Biography
The annals present few informations about Svyatoslav Ingvarevich. He is mentioned only once as Prince of Shumsk, in the list of Russian princes who died in the Batte of the Kalka River on May 31, 1223. However, on the basis of his inheritance, modern researchers conclude that Svyatoslav was a descendant of the prince of Lutsk Yaroslav Izyaslavich, who, under an agreement with his brother, Mstislav Izyaslavich, received the eastern part of Volhynia, including Shumsk. In 1211 Shumsk, together with a number of other towns of Volhynia, was under the rule of the prince of Lutsk Ingvar Yaroslavich [1][2][3].
The researchers expressed various hypotheses about the origin of Svyatoslav. NA Baumgarten considered Svyatoslav a descendant of Yaroslav Izyaslavich, but did not specify the exact relationship [4].Yaroslav Izyaslavich had four sons, Svyatoslav, probably, was a descendant of one of them. According to the Polish historian D. Dombrowski, since in the list of the dead in the Batte of the Kalka River prince Svyatoslav is named after Prince Izyaslav Ingvarevich, who, most likely, was the son of Ingvar Yaroslavich, as well as the possession of the Principality of Shumsk, which Ingvar Yaroslavich had owned before, Svyatoslav could be the brother of Izyaslav. OM Rapov [5] and J. Fennell [6] suggest that Svyatoslav was the son or grandson of Izyaslav Ingvarevich. L. Voitovich also considers that Svyatoslav is the son of Izyaslav Ingvarevich[7]. DV Donskoy considers that Svyatoslav is the son of Yaroslav Vladimirovich of Novgorod [8]. Dombrovsky examines several versions and admits that Svyatoslav could also be the son of Izyaslav Yaroslavich, the son of Ingvar Yaroslavich, or his grandson - a son mentioned in 1211, not named by his son's name [3]..
It is not known whether Svyatoslav was married and whether he had children.
