Svyatoslav Vseslavich of Vitebsk was born 1065 to Vseslav Bryachislavich of Polotsk (c1039-1101) and died 1130 Constantinople, Turkey of unspecified causes.
Svyatoslav Vseslavich (baptized: George [1]; - after 1129), Prince of Vitebsk 1101-1129, son of Vseslav Bryachislavich.
Biography
Svyatoslav was one of the younger sons of Vseslav Bryachislavich. In 1101, after Vseslav's death, the Principality of Polotsk was divided between his sons. In the opinion of A.E. Presnyakov and T. Vasilevsky, Svyatoslav inherited the principality og Vitebsk parish. This assumption is based on the fact that his grandsons Vseslav and Bryachislav reigned in Vitebsk. In 1129 during the next campaign of Mstislav Vladimirovich seized Polotsk, caught Svyatoslav and his brothers Davyd and Rostislav and sent them to Constantinople [2]. The further fate of Svyatoslav is unknown.
Marriage and children
Svyatoslav married Sofiya Vladimirovna. Her name is established by the found seals with the image of St. George and Sofiya [3] and the composition of the cross by Euphrosyne of Polotsk. There is speculation that Sofiya Vladimirovna, Svyatoslav's wife was Vladimir II Vsevolodovich Monomakh's daughter [4]. This assumption is based on the fact that, in the annals, Svyatoslav's son Vasilko is named grandson of Vladimir Monomakh [5][6][7]. The reasons for which Vladimir Monomakh, then the actual co-prince of Svyatopolk Izyaslavich of Kiev, gave his daughter for a petty prince, have not been investigated by historians
Children:
- Vasilko Svyatoslavich Prince of Polotsk.
- Predslava Svyatoslavna of Polotsk (1104-1167) (monastic: Euphrosyne) took monastic vows, canonized.
- Gradislava Svyatoslavna of Polotsk (monastic: Yevdokiya) (? After 1167 or 1173) took monastic vows.
- Vyacheslav Svyatoslavich (Vyachko)
- Davyd Svyatoslavich (c1105-c1170)
The order in which Svyatoslav's children are listed is conditional, but it can be assumed that Vasilko was older than Vyacheslav and Davyd.
Notes
- ^ According to the "Life of St. Euphrosyne ", her father is referred to by the Christian name George. The official name of the prince ia not mentioned, but claims that George was the youngest son of Vseslav. Despite all the confusion of the genealogy of the Vseslavichs, most historians consider Svyatoslav to be the youngest son of Vseslav..
