Sylvanus Pickard was born on December 8, 1800 in Madison County, New York. Sylvanus came to Chautauqua Coutny with his family in March of 1816. They settled at first on the Ballard farm and subsequently on "Pickard Street" in the Town of Ellery. Sylvanus married Betsy Becker. Sylvanus move west to Iowa in 1879, but died a year later on January 23, 1880 at his daughter's house, the wife of Henry Perbamin in Odgen, Iowa. His body was transported to Chautauqua County the following Monday. Sylvanus Pickard had been a most useful and esteemed citizen of the town of Ellery for over 45 years.
