Biography

Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark was born 30 May 1906 in Old Royal Palace, Athens, Attica, Greece to Andrew of Greece and Denmark (1882-1944) and Alice Mountbatten (1885-1969) and died 16 October 1969 Konstanz, Konstanz, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany of unspecified causes. She married Berthold Friedrich von Baden (1906-1963) 17 August 1931 in Baden-Baden, Baden-Baden, Badene-Wurttemberg, Germany.

Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark was a Greek and Danish princess by birth and Margravine of Baden through her marriage to Berthold, pretender to the throne of the Grand Duchy of Baden. She lived a happy childhood in Greece before the tragedy of the Balkan Wars forced her family to live many years in exile in Switzerland.

In June 1931, Théodora became engaged to Berthold, Margrave of Baden.[1] Son of the last chancellor of the German Empire and titular Grand Duke of Baden from November 1929, Berthold was in charge of a substantial fortune. A man of culture, he lived in Salem, where his father had founded a school with the help of his secretary, Kurt Hahn, in 1920.[2][3][4] On 17 August 1931, Theodora and Berthold married in a double religious ceremony, both Lutheran and Orthodox, at the Neues Schloss in Baden-Baden, which resulted in a large family reunion, at which the bride's mother, Princess Alice, was not present.[3][5] After the ceremony, the newlyweds went on their honeymoon in Capri, Italy, where they were hosts to the Swedish poet Axel Munthe.[3]

Back in Germany, the couple moved to Salem Castle, a former Cistercian abbey transformed into a princely residence after its secularization in 1803.[6][7][8][9] The Margrave and Margravine of Baden had three children: Margarita (1932–2013),[10] Maximilian (1933–2022) and Ludwig (born 1937).[11][12]
