Thomas Brain was born in 1815 in Bletchingdon, Oxfordshire, a idyllic village north of Oxford. He married Maria Butler in 1838 and they had 7 children, 3 of whom died in infancy. Maria Brain died in 1848 aged 30 and Thomas' cousin Martha Brain took over as the housekeeper. The cottage they lived in was on the Islip Road. Thomas' health declined and in December 1854, he died aged 39 of phthisis. His 3 surviving daughter all went into service in Oxford, and his son into the Oxford Militia.
