Sir Thomas Burnett of Leys, 1st Baronet was born circa 1590 to Alexander Burnett of Leys (c1574-1619) and Katharine Gordon of Lesmoir (c1570-c1620) and died 27 June 1653 of unspecified causes. He married Margaret Douglas of Glenbervie (c1580-c1620) 1615 . He married Jane Moncreiffe (c1590-) 1621 .
The eldest surviving son of Alexander Burnett of Leys and Katherine, eldest daughter of Alexander Gordon of Lesmoir, "Thomas Burnaetus de Leyes" appears in the records of King's College, Aberdeen and Aberdeen University, as a student who matriculated in 1603. He went on to have a distinguished public career, and in 1620 he was knighted. He was one of the earliest recipients of the dignity of Baronet of Nova Scotia, his patent dated at Holyrood Palace on 21 April 1626.
