Rev. Thomas Dilap Smith was born 10 March 1702 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States to Thomas Smith (1678-1742) and Mary Corwin (1676-1716) and died 23 May 1795 Portland, Cumberland County, Maine, United States of unspecified causes. He married Sarah Tyng (1702-1742) 12 September 1728 in Dunstable, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He married Olive Plaisted (1698-1763) 1 March 1744 in Biddeford, York County, Maine. He married Elizabeth Hunt (1716-1799) 12 August 1766 in Biddeford, York County, Maine.

Born March 10, Thomas Smith was the eldest son of Thomas and Mary (Corwin) Smith, the grandson of Thomas Smith, who was a Boston merchant, and father of Rev. Peter Thatcher Smith.

Thomas Smith entered Harvard College in 1716, at the age of 14, and took his first degree in 1720. On March 8, 1727 he became the first minister of the first church in Portland, ME (known then as Falmouth Neck).

He was married three times - first to Susan Tyng, who bore his eight children. She died October 1, 1742.

Undoubtedly Mr. Smith found the care of his family of six living children (the oldest but eleven and the youngest not quite two years old) added to the burden of his other duties, too severe for him. On March 1, 1744, he married a widow, Mrs. Olive Jordan, whose husband had died two months after Mr. Smith's first wife. The second wife lived twenty years after this marriage, and died suddenly on January 3, 1763.

Mr. Smith's third wife was the widow Elizabeth (nee Hunt)Wendell whom he married on August 12, 1766, and who survived him. She was the mother-in-law of his son, Peter Thatcher Smith. (Mother of Elizabeth Wendell Smith)

The Reverend Thomas Smith kept a dirary, or journal from 1720 through 1788 which were published after his death.
