Biography

Thomas Hender "Tinker" Arnold was born 27 April 1777 in Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States to Nathaniel Thomas Arnold (1754-1777) and Thankful Field (1758-1832) and died 28 November 1852 Abington, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States of unspecified causes. He married Mary Polly Chard (1767-1849) 16 January 1796 in Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.

Thomas Hand Arnold (also known as Thomas Henderson Arnold, Thomas Hend Arnold, and Thomas Hendey Arnold), the first of that name in the town of Abington, Massachusetts, was born it is supposed in Hingham, Massachusetts and moved with his parents, when quite young, to the town of Charlestown, Massachusetts, where his father was a land owner and farmer at the commencement of the war for independence. The father took an active part in that great struggle. He (the father) was arrested and made prisoner by the British, taken to Boston, where he was put on board a prison ship, and thence to Quebec, dying on the ship in the harbor of Quebec. Thomas Hand Arnold, being deprived of a father's care by the cruelty of war, had to make his own way in life from early boyhood. He located in the town of Abington, Plymouth County, Massachusetts and there followed shoemaking and spent the remainder of his life, dying there. He was a natural-born mechanic, being able to make most anything, and was known as "Tinker Tom", and was the founder of a family of skilled mechanics. His home was at the end of Liberty or Tinker street, which street was name for him.

On 16 February 1796 (intentions published 16 January 1796) he married in Abington, Mary Chard and their children all born in Abington were: Nathaniel, born 25 February 1797; Jonathan, 20 May 1798; George Miller, 15 May 1799; Polly, 3 March 1801; and Caleb, 18 May 1805.
