Thomas Hughan was born 1793 in Lowlands of Baldoon, Wigtownshire, Scotland to Alexander Hughan (c1767-) and Christian Cowan (c1770-) .
Wigtown, Kirkmabreck and Kirkcowen are all located on Wigtown Bay.
In 1855 Thomas's daughter Christina immigrated to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on the “Gambia” from Liverpool arriving on 22 Apr 1855. With Christina was her 2 year old son Gordon. Christina was immigrating to Australia to join her husband John Hughan who had immigrated ahead of her. (Christina is known to be daughter of Thomas Hughan and Janet Law as in the 1851 census it is recorded that she was born at Kirkcowen, she named her first child Janet Law Hughan after her mother, and her death record records her father's name as Thomas Hughan.) On the same ship was a Grace Hughan aged 24. It is not known if this was Thoma's daughter and Christina's sister, or a different Grace Hughan entirely. It is possible that Thomas's daughter Grace married Robert Donaldson in Birkenhead, Cheshire in the Mar Q 1854 (where Grace's maternal spinster aunts were then living) and never immigrated to Australia. A copy of the marriage certificate would show if the Grace who married Robert Donaldson had a father by the name of Thomas Hughan.
