Birth Certificate
Tom Smith was born 30 April 1888 in Gilgandra, New South Wales, Australia to John Thomas Smith (c1848-) and Catherine Donelly (c1849-1919) and died 2 December 1966 Bondi Junction, New South Wales, Australia of unspecified causes. He married Elizabeth Emily Windle (1893-1985) 12 July 1915 in Waverley, New South Wales, Australia.
Tom remembers seeing his father only once, as a small child, when he came on horseback to Gilgandra and gave Tom a bag of marbles; he had no recollection of his mother.
He left his foster parents' farm when he was 18 (around 1906) and moved to Sydney, his first night's accommodation being on a Manly ferry. He eventually did quite well for himself, getting a job with Waverley Council, and moving to Camp Cove where the children grew up.
Tom was very well known in the Watsons Bay area and taught children to swim at (Alf Voklers) Watsons Bay Baths for many years, continuing this activity well into his retirement.
