Thomas John Roberts was born in 1813 in Kent, England. He joined the 17th Lancers in 1831 and spent much of his time in Ireland, Scotland or England. He married Esther Carroll in 1848 in Dublin, Ireland. They had a daughter Ann Elizabeth Roberts in 1851. Thomas was discharged in 1856 and settled in Brighton, Sussex, England. His wife fell ill in the early 1860s. Thomas was a servant and met Mary Ann Walder, she was soon pregnant. Esther died in November 1863 of phthisis, which she had for a number of years according to the death certificate, and Thomas' daughter was born 31 December 1863 in Mary Ann Walder's home village of Warninglid. They moved away to London shortly after the birth. Thomas acknowledged paternity of the baby and she was baptised with his name as the father. She was baptised Mary Ann Kate Roberts. Thomas' eldest daughter Ann went to live with her aunty in Bermondsey. Thomas and Mary Ann had more children. They lived in various areas of London and settled in Holborn in 1878. Kate and her sister were tailoresses. Their paternal gran was a dressmaker as was their children. Mary Ann Roberts died in 1886 and Thomas died in 1889.
