Biography
Umstead Rencher, Sr. was born 10 January 1793 in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina, United States to John Grant Rencher (1744-1812) and Nancy Ann Nelson (1760-1829) and died 31 May 1823 Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina, United States of unspecified causes. He married Stacey Roberts (1808-1880) 8 November 1822 in Wake County, North Carolina, United States.
The fourth son and fifth child of John Grant Rencher and Ann Nelson was born January 10, 1793. He was named Umpstead Rencher. Umpstead was one of the finest locksmiths of his time and was very successful financially, accumulating a great deal of wealth for those days. However, he was slow in finding a wife and was twenty-nine years and ten months old when he married Stacy Roberts. Stacy Roberts was born sometime in 1808 in North Carolina. She was something less than fifteen years old when they were married on November 8, 1822.
On May 31, 1823, less than seven months after their marriage, and at the age of thirty years and four months, Umpstead Rencher died. His death was sudden and apparently was caused by heat exhaustion.
Three months after the untimely death of Umpstead Rencher on August 12, 1823, his fifteen-year old wife, Stacy, gave birth to their first and only child, a son, named Umpstead Rencher Jr. As Umpstead Sr. had been successful financially and left a plantation and wealth at his death, his brother Abraham Rencher was appointed guardian of Umpstead Jr. and his affairs.
Abraham Rencher (1798-1883) was a politician, prominent in government affairs, both state and federal. He served as United States Congressman from North Carolina from 1829 to 1838: then from 1841 to 1843. He was then appointed United States Ambassador to Portugal. On his return he was offered the position of Secretary of the Navy by President Buchannan, but declined and accepted the Governorship of the territory of New Mexico. His portrait hangs in the Governors building at Santa Fe, New Mexico. At the time of his appointment as Ambassador, his brother, Daniel Grant Rencher, was made guardian of Umpstead Rencher, Jr..
