Unzha is a village in the Makaryev Rayon of Kostroma Oblast. It is the administrative center of Unzha rural settlement .

It is located to the north of Makariev on the right bank of the river Unji .

History[]

For the first time it is mentioned in chronicles under 1219 year, as already existing settlement.

Investigations of Yu. N. Urban recorded two settlements dated within the XI-XVII centuries and correlated with the fortresses [1]. The expedition of the Kostroma Regional Historical and Archaeological Museum-Reserve in 2014-2015 announced the allocation of 8 new sections of the cultural layer with finds of things from the 11th-13th centuries, considered as the settlements of the ancient Unji. At the same time, the statement: "Previously, archeological monuments in this territory were not known" [2] - calls into question the legitimacy of the allocation of all sites as newly identified. In Unge was found a lead seal with a trident - the birthmark of the dynasty of the Rurikovich , probably the prince Svyatoslav Yaroslavich (Grand Duke of Kiev in 1073 - 1076 years)[3][4].

In 1679 - in the Galich couple (order) . In 1708, Unzha became one of the 20 cities of the Archangelsk province . Since 1719 Unzha became the center of the Unzhensky Uyezd of the Galician province of the Archangel province . In 1778 Unzha became the center of the Unzhenskaya region of the Kostroma governorate . With the emergence of the city, Unzha gradually lost its administrative role and lost the status of the city.

Population[]

At the beginning of the 20th century, Unzha was a "supernumerary city" with a population of 1,244 people [5]. Today, the population has decreased noticeably. In 2008, the population of Unzha was 366 people.

Etymology[]

The name of the village comes from the Unzha River ( megamore. Ӱҥysӧ ), which means "quiet, quiet" from the Mari language.
