Uriah Marvin was born 1742 in New Canaan, Fairfield County, Connecticut to David Marvin (1711-1779) and Hannah Gregory (1711-1779) and died 1779 Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania of unspecified causes. He married Phebe Nesbitt (1759-1840) 1774 in Pennsylvania.

Biography

Uriah Marvin, son of Capt David Marvin and Hannah Gregory (1711-1779). Born in 1742 in New Canaan, CT and died "in the summer of 1779", in Wilkes-Barre PA.

Uriah settled in Wyoming, Pennsylvania as early as 02 Jun 1769. In the spring of 1772 he was in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and later in Plymouth, Pennsylvania of which he was one of the first settlers.

Revolutionary War Service

Uriah and his family were survivors of the Wyoming Valley Massacre where he fought in the battle with the Indians and Tories of 03 July 1778. They afterwards fled to Orange County, New York with his wife and children. Having placed them in safety, he returned a few weeks later and joined Col. Butler's troops. His name appears on the N.Y. Military Rolls, as a soldier in an Orange Co Company.

Uriah also was in the Revolutionary War in Capt, Olmstead's Co., 13th CT Regiment, Aug-Oct, 1776, and in Col. Roger Enos's Regiment on the Hudson, Jun-Sept, 1778. He also had two brothers serve in the war, Silas and Ichabod.

Marriage and Family

Uriah Marvin married "in the spring or summer of 1774" to Phebe Nesbitt (1759-1840), daughter of James and Phebe (Harrison) Nesbitt, of Wyoming, Pennsylvania. She married as her second husband, Timothy Hopkins, Jr. by whom she had nine children, one of whom, Jemima Hopkins, was the mother of Gen. W.S. Rosecrans, of the Union Army in the Civil War.
