Discussion of ads[]

The following interesting exchange regarding ads is from "Central":

I like what I understand you're trying to do. I hope you can gradually eliminate the chance that we might see an ad that takes over the background and has a banner four or more times the standard size so that less than two lines of page content is visible!

Is it really still impossible at present for you to set an absolute limit to the amount of screen an ad can take up?

22 days ago by Robin Patterson

We'll talk about this more in tomorrow's blog too, but background ads and large ads like the ones you described are here to stay. Those are important parts of direct ad business, and they will help us remove many of the other ad units that clutter the page.
The aim is to focus more on the holistic page experience. We feel that if a user has to see a large ad, they should not have to see seven others on the same page. These kind of controls are things that we've been putting into place this past year, and that will continue into this year as well.
Ultimately, this is a scenario where everyone can benefit. The high-end advertisers that bring in a lot of revenue don't want to have their ads next to the lower-quality programmatic ones, and would prefer to be the only ad on the page. We can bring in more revenue from that, allowing us to clean up the ad experience in general. That, in turn, gives a more premium look to communities (plus better page performance) where they don't have to be cluttered with junky ads that can drive away readers and contributors.

Hartford Genealogy Wikia[]

I have just noticed your links to "Hartford Genealogy Wikia", which should be relevant to a lot of the pages I have been creating lately. Is this Wiki defunct? Should we import all of its pages? Thurstan (talk) 03:10, April 9, 2018 (UTC)

"Defunct" could be a bit strong, but gives an indication of recent inactivity by its one real contributor/founder. Curiously, shows no recent changes in 999 days. But there is some good material there. Over 200 uncategorized articles, for example.
I've just written a message to the founder: Incidentally, our New England expert could be even more interested than you are.
Thanks for the reminder. -- Robin Patterson (Talk) 05:36, April 9, 2018 (UTC)

Joseph A. McCallum (1955) - does he belong here?[]

There was an article about Gayle Chaneyfield Jenkins (1957- ) posted by Mr. Richard Arthur Norton, which included information about several people, i.e. Joseph A. McCallum, Anibal Ramos Jr. and John Sharpe James. They all seem to be working in New Jersey.

As posting all the information regarding several people under the title of a single one of them seemed not to make any sense, I just fragmented Mr. Norton's information into separate articles for each of the persons involved. This is the only contribution I had. However I have no additional information about these persons, and I don't think the information is taken from Wikipedia (anyway, I was not able to identify anything similar in Wikipedia).

As this is my only contribution, I have objection to processing or deleting the article, and if I was wrong, by reassembling all these separate articles in a single article (as they were submitted before). I only consider that, logically, any decision taken should be the same for all the four articles in this category. Afil (talk) 02:00, April 27, 2018 (UTC)

I have forgotten the details, but your separating of the article into pieces for each person seems like a reasonable approach. I will view those articles and see if anything else comes to mind. -- Robin Patterson (Talk) 02:44, April 27, 2018 (UTC)

Showfacts residences[]

If you are going to work on {{Showfacts residences}}, could you please create a test version, perhaps {{Showfacts residences test}}, and work on that. Otherwise, every time you edit {{Showfacts residences}}, the Wiki servers will recompute the thousands of pages that use this template, causing unnecessary load. When everyone is happy that {{Showfacts residences test}} is working properly, it can be transferred to {{Showfacts residences}}. (sorry, putting on my "IT professional" hat here). Thurstan (talk) 00:56, May 8, 2018 (UTC)

No worries, cobber! Template:Showfacts residences-trial has been around for a wee bit. And I have just rediscovered Form:Residences. (I'm glad you've got that hat!) -- Robin Patterson (Talk) 01:23, May 8, 2018 (UTC)

Robert Mulley (1883-1917)[]

I have just created a page for Robert Mulley (1883-1917), who was from New South Wales, but apparently served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during World War I. His date of death is that of the First Battle of Passchendaele, but I don't see much about him in the Australian records online. Do you know any New Zealand records (corresponding to our War Memorial records) which might say more about him? Thurstan (talk) 03:35, November 6, 2018 (UTC)

New contributor from the Netherlands[]

Hello Robin,

I’m from the Netherlands. I have a very extensive family tree in MyHeritage, but I think it is more fun and sensible to build a singular worldwide family tree within the same environment. Therefore I started to insert my family records in Wikitree and now also in Familypedia.

I am new and still unfamiliar with Familypedia. I now have two challenges, which perhaps you could help me further.

  • I have changed the name of one of my first pages in Godfried van Leuven-Gaasbeek (1209-1254) (there was an error in the name) and lost in the proces the references to the subpages /tree and /descendants ? How can I solve this?
  • The following syntax doesn’t work on Familypedia. What should I change?

(Richard Goossens (talk) 11:36, December 1, 2018 (UTC))

Hello, Richard! I too have some material on MyHeritage, Geni, and WikiTree but this is my favourite. You must have been busy to get back several centuries here so soon. Do you know that it is slightly easier to do a child's page before its parents' pages because several fields in the parent forms get filled automatically?
Renaming pages - maybe you did not tick the "Rename subpages" box? So you may have to move the subpages individually. Just as well there are only two! You may then need to republish the sensor page then the article so that all link properly. OR - maybe just refreshing/updating the sensor page and then the article if you did rename the subpages? Tell me if any problem and I will look at them. I may look at them anyway just for interest.
For the language template, compare with mine - you may need to use "Babel" instead of "Languages". And on Wikia we tend to use only three numbers. Oh - and I think the "nl" needs something after it, but a check with mine should clarify it all.

I notice some correspondence lately about one Alpaida. I notice that you have been playing in that space already, and Wikipedia seems to think that Alpaida (794-) is the same person as Alpais (793-855). Thurstan (talk) 07:57, December 4, 2018 (UTC)

I think my recent involvement was merely to commend the critic on his vigilance and to suggest that we ask Mr Tol to provide more documentation. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 10:02, December 6, 2018 (UTC)
Sorry, I saw your name and the wonky footnote formatting on Alpais (793-855) and assumed that you had written the notes. I see with a closer look at the history that you did not. Thurstan (talk) 18:52, December 6, 2018 (UTC)

Another mysterious fix[]

I see that clicking on the red-links in the person infobox now pre-fills the form. I don't remember where the discussion of the failure of this feature is. Thurstan (talk) 04:09, January 9, 2019 (UTC)

Parent names have performed like that for some years. There have probably been glitches but I don't remember them; try under Help Desk. Spouse links pre-fill marriage details (and I think I mistakenly wasted some of your time querying some related matter). What exactly are you saying now? --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 04:17, January 9, 2019 (UTC)
Sorry, I am saying it had stopped working: mentioned in Forum:Spouse name in infobox should lead to form and initially in the second heading of Forum:Problem when creating parent pages. The mangling of the URL has now stopped: I thought I noticed that it was still happening just a few months ago. I remember telling you that clicking on the link from "Preview" worked. Thurstan (talk) 04:24, January 9, 2019 (UTC)
I'm glad your memory is so often better than mine. You can remember things from 13 months ago - such as - and with far fewer intervening edits I should be able to. OK, so the parent redlinks now do what they should without needing preview? That's great! Probably thanks to you. I'll try to remember to update relevant help pages if I come across any that need it. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 05:27, January 9, 2019 (UTC)

2022 Pop Music Groups[]

Looks like we have a major dispute to be arbitrated on Familypedia. User:Maboyce716 has created a several pages for pop music groups "established in 2022". To me this smacks of science fiction and should not be allowed here. I've asked already several times for documentation and none has been provided. Please advise. MainTour (talk) 21:52, February 27, 2019 (UTC)

Thanks. I deleted the obviously untrue bits in one. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 03:20, March 4, 2019 (UTC)

Downloading images seems to be turned off, when did this happen? When I try to download an image I uploaded my only option is a webpage option not the original jpg or png. --Richard Arthur Norton (talk) 00:20, March 4, 2019 (UTC)

Images are a bit of a mystery to me. Sorry, I have no idea why you may have that problem. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 03:20, March 4, 2019 (UTC)

Another SMW pagename bug[]

This morning I was looking at the page for Property:Killer, and I notice that the "browse interface" often doesn't work. A section of the listing looks like:

Adalbert II von Ballenstedt (c1030-c1080) + Egeno II. von Konradsburg (?-?) +

Erik of Sweden (1282-1318) + Birger of Sweden (1280-1321) +

Waldemar of Sweden (c1280-1318) + Birger of Sweden (1280-1321) +

Bernard of Italy (797-818) + Louis the Pious (778-840) +

Louis I de Chiny (?-1025) + Gothelon I de Lorraine (c967-1044) +

If we click on the "+" signs in the left-hand column, we get a "fact box" for the page specified, which seems to be designed behaviour. However, clicking on the "+" signs in the right-hand column should search for pages with the matching property value, which certainly works for "Egeno II. von Konradsburg (?-?)". However the ones for "Birger of Sweden (1280-1321)" and "Gothelon I de Lorraine (c967-1044)" give an error message: "Birger of Sweden (128021)" cannot be used as a page name in this wiki, and an invalid search value, while the one for "Louis the Pious (778-840)" generated a blank search value, and just give a list of all pages with the property set.

Thurstan (talk) 03:24, March 5, 2019 (UTC)

Well, I'm not sure whether I have ever looked at Property:Killer or would want to, so you may be preaching to the unconverted and unaffected - but maybe this apparent problem has wider application? And why would "1280-1321" get reported as "128021" - maybe "-13" is an ASCII code? Incidentally, why can I not see fact boxes on sensor pages any more? --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 05:09, March 7, 2019 (UTC)
Sorry, "Killer" was a simple example (and the page I was looking at): I am sure that it will behave the same way if you look at "Father", "Mother" and any of the other properties which have person pages with values. You wondered why? It looks like they use "-" as an escape character to code for special characters, and so they have to code "-" itself, which codes as "-2D". The bug seems to be that they code "John of England (1167-1216)" as "John-20of-20England-20(1167-2D1216)", but when they come to decode it, they don't decode "-2D12" as "-12", they decode it as the unicode character whose hex value is "2D12". Thurstan (talk) 05:59, March 7, 2019 (UTC)
I'm pleased that I saw that the hyphen might be part of a code. But does this quirk affect what the properties do, or can we just tell readers not to try to use the plus signs? ----- Robin Patterson (Talk) 11:53, March 7, 2019 (UTC)
I suspect that it only affects that particular function: even the "+"s on the left work, it is only the ones on the right that are broken. Thurstan (talk) 20:55, March 7, 2019 (UTC)
Let's hope so. Meanwhile, I have created Help:Search by property and you may improve it or not. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 10:16, March 9, 2019 (UTC)

Duplicate county navbox templates?[]

Why do we have templates {{Navbox county2-en}} and {{Navbox county-us}}, which seem to be almost exactly the same (but not quite)? Thurstan (talk) 05:45, February 8, 2021 (UTC)

Phlox created them both in 2007, possibly forgetting by the time he created the second one. I started tinkering with the county one a few months later and you and others joined in subsequently. You started tinkering with the us one in 2011. Curiously, each one is on about 4,000 pages - mostly US "bare" county pages but some born and died pages (and the odd city page such as Monticello, Utah!). Maybe there's a case for editing the US one if there are good points the "county" one (or the European ones) could add to it, then redirecting the other. (I think at least one of them was mentioned in a forum; "templates update"? --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 12:06, February 8, 2021 (UTC)

Showfacts person[]

You might like to comment on the blank lines that have been added to {{Showfacts person}}: it does not look good to me! Thurstan (talk) 00:32, March 5, 2021 (UTC)

Not having seen what they did to any displays (since the reversal), I can't be sure. From my rather ignorant perspective, I would guess that they don't affect display because they are not in the infobox section. But no obvious purpose to them. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 04:30, March 5, 2021 (UTC)
No, he added the birth and death place categories that we vetoed before, and included some blank lines, which showed before the "children" heading. I think I am about to retire from policing this circus! Thurstan (talk) 05:27, March 5, 2021 (UTC)
The question is not about the blank lines, which I left there just while I was checking how the system is working. The question I am asking is, if we have the categories for birth and death place categories, why do we use them in some case, if the author of the article includes them, but not if, for whatever reason, he forgets them? I would also ask why we automatize the categories for the year of birth or death and not for the year of marriage? The suggestion is that, if the system includes some categories, if possible, these should be automatically created. If they are unnecessary, we should delete the categories. What I object to is a hybrid system in which some categories are used only for some articles, and not for all those having the required information. Afil (talk) 06:39, March 5, 2021 (UTC)

Discussion of birth and death etc is continued elsewhere. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 03:17, March 20, 2021 (UTC)

Problems to be discussed[]

I have a few problems in which Thurstan and I have different opinions. In a nutshell, these are:

  • I am against using denigrational slurs, which are not accepted by historians, in naming families, as in the case of the Capet family.
  • I think we should have an automatic inclusion of categories for the location of birth, death etc. for articles where this information is available.
  • I think we should have a standard for the geographic names of royal families (English or national language).

The issues have been discussed with Thurstan and can be seen on his talk page. As we did not reach a consensus, I would suggest that a forum for these issues be organized so that we can find an acceptable solution. It should not be a discussion between two persons having different views.

Afil (talk) 06:27, March 5, 2021 (UTC)

Yes, I think I suggested on his talk page that a forum was the right place for things that affect more than two of us. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 07:22, March 5, 2021 (UTC)

comment please[]

What do you think of my addition to Forum:Wiki Rules and Blocking Policy? There have been a couple of random edits to {{showfacts person}} lately. I think we need to have a structured process for approving updates. I am about to start that for a new version without the automatic "born in/died in" categories. Thurstan (talk) 03:59, March 7, 2021 (UTC)

I spent many minutes on it and its infobox and doc. Significant employer, and bearer of info about death. Or maybe you would like to redirect all its inward links back to WP and write a guideline page prohibiting articles about businesses and other employers and delete "Businesses" from the various county templates and delete all categories about architecture starting at Category:Architectural_styles and delete all but a couple of subcategories of Category:Fiction and Category:Cellular respiration and all its subcategories; and delete a few thousand other non-genealogical pages I could name. Noticed now. It does contain a date, which may be a good start. I'll approach the author. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 23:41, March 20, 2021 (UTC)
"google chrome" translates:
Osama Al-Jubouri
Osama al-Gburi is an Iraqi novelist, born in 1989 in the Dora district, south of Baghdad. Among the most important of his books is the novel of the Muslifiyyah, and the white of the black, no, but I can, sterile.
(presumably the last bit has been mangled). Thurstan (talk) 23:52, March 20, 2021 (UTC)
I've communicated. Facebook page (much of which is in what I guess is Iraqi Arabic) includes:

I've just created the above article. It looks fine when I'm logged in, but when logged out the infobox is fine and everything else says unknown HELP! William Booth was the founder of The Salvation Army. If you can't fix please delete. Kathleen.wright5 (talk) 03:43, March 21, 2021 (UTC)

Delete??? A half-good article that has had a lot of work put into it and is about a great person whose parents and children are known? No, I've added to it. I've not come across your problem, as far as I remember; I'd rather not log out to check. It may need staff attention if it's still there. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 04:53, March 21, 2021 (UTC)
Whatever you've done has corrected the problem. --Kathleen.wright5 (talk) 05:21, March 21, 2021 (UTC)
One of life's mysteries. A fresh edit often fixes things here. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 09:21, March 22, 2021 (UTC)
This seems to be "normal" behaviour (perhaps another SMW "funny"): when I upgraded a page to SMW this morning, if I viewed it from a different browser (which doesn't log me on) I could see that behaviour. Perhaps Mediawiki has different caches for logged-on and logged-off. It does seem to be another thing that is fixed by a "null edit". Thurstan (talk) 22:04, March 22, 2021 (UTC)

Australian Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander family history website[]

Includes Biographical Index and Collection catalogue.

Thank you - but of more interest to Thurstan (Canberra resident) than to me. I hope you can create an article for that website under Category:Genealogy websites and add the link on Australia. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 09:21, March 22, 2021 (UTC)

Could you please delete these pages[]

I've been going through the genealogy sites listed in Familypedia:WikiNode, when I came across two that should be removed, they are:

GenCircles - now MyHeritage
Curious Fox - now WebCentrix, Inc. --Kathleen.wright5 (talk) 11:31, March 22, 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for link-checking. Can't we just rename them or simply note the changes? (Curious Fox was set up by an old friend of mine who moved from northern England to southern England for her health's sake. I hope she's still OK.) --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 11:46, March 22, 2021 (UTC)
I tried renaming GenCircles, but can't do it because there's already a page at MyHeritage --Kathleen.wright5 (talk) 12:03, March 22, 2021 (UTC)
Edited GenCircles and created new category. Thank you for helping. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 23:20, March 22, 2021 (UTC)

Re:List of genealogy databases[]

All content is now in List of genealogy databases, the other list (now empty) List of general genealogy databases is now a redirect at Wikipedia. Could you please give me Admin rights here so I can delete things like the above in future. I'm an Admin and Bureaucrat at Christianity Knowledge Base. See my user page here. I'm also an Admin at Wikisource see My User page at Wikisource --Kathleen.wright5 (talk) 00:51, March 24, 2021 (UTC)

Familypedia:Requests for adminship --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 10:20, March 24, 2021 (UTC)
Your edit summary for that page was a bit hasty and you didn't read the page very carefully. Thurstan had to add a heading. I'm inclined to agree with him. Small procedural errors here can make an awfully big difference to tens of thousands of pages. Forgetting a required colon may be harmless some of the time, though it's surprising to see in someone who has done thousands of edits on Wikisource and long been active on the CKB wikia. Your edits to Leonard Nimoy's article were mostly wasted effort because the page should have been upgraded first; I'll attend to that now. Thank you for the great work in emptying the "general genealogy databases" - but I would redirect it as WP does, not delete it, because someone may have bookmarked it and not feel good being cut off. You've done valuable work here and there's plenty more worth doing, so more work on safe areas will allow you to become more familiar with some of the tricky bits and reduce error-propensity. How about producing articles for your father and then your mother soon? (Starting with one for yourself would be easier in the long run because you'll probably want a semi-automatic "tree" page.) (Now someone needs to update Familypedia:Contributors/Edit count again!!!) --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 00:44, March 25, 2021 (UTC)

Programming Help for SMW Macros[]

Hi Robin - I've noticed that several of the Template features are still broken such as siblings & descendants and the list of Non-SMW profiles that you had for me to work on under my name. I have several close family members that have very strong programming skills that may be able to help fix these features. Where can I get more info on how these templates work to share with them? MainTour (talk) 02:22, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

Thurstan and rtol know more about them than I do. Have you tried ? But I have suggested that our Wiki Manager should be the first person we should ask. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 12:02, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi Robin - My 2022 NY Resolution is to learn how to be an SMW Template editor and I have been taking tutorials starting from the link you just shared. I want to explore how the children templates work and its connection to the Siblings and Descendants which seem to be related, but I'm having hard time seeing how to access those? I can find the templates documentation easily enough though (Template:Showfacts children. Can you point me to either the sandbox or our Wiki Manager? MainTour (talk) 04:42, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

I wish I could remember who our wiki manager is. Popped in about a year ago and fixed several things. Conspicuous by his or her absence when now really needed since the software upgrade. I suggest that you "Contact Fandom" to ask who it is. I'm a bit much tied up with wife-care to get into anything long or complicated. Thanks again for your enthusiasm! --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 03:10, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

FamilyPedia Association[]

Another question: I know several of us are getting up there in years, have you ever given any thought to the creation of a formal non-profit organization to continue the FamilyPedia project into future years? I have a some experience with starting a non-profit in California. Getting started might be tricky as I know that you, Thurstan, Afil and myself and others pretty much live in different countries. Maybe we can hold a monthly Zoom discussion group to set an agenda and a plan for growing and improving this site. MainTour (talk) 02:22, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

I don't see that it would help much. Contributors will (or won't) still contribute with staff help, as long as the wiki survives. You could start a forum item on the idea so that all can easily see it. Incidentally, there is no capital "P" in our name. (:-) --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 12:07, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

Duplicating Categories Listing[]

I've just noticed that every time I edit any non-person page (such as Rich in Barnstable County, Massachusetts) - it duplicates the categories, repeatedly with each edit. Another example Las Vegas Indian Mission, MainTour (talk) 13:45, 31 July 2021 (UTC)

I hadn't noticed. Maybe it was a temporary glitch. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 12:10, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

Another temporary glitch? I did one 11 days ago. Go to your own "blog" page and see if there's a "Create..." button at the right. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 12:14, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

John_Harrison_(1828-1894) Mother's age at birth[]

Hello, I saw your link on page and I'm wondering about the age of the Mother. If the dates on the page are correct, John Harrison's (1828-1894) mother would have been older than 65 years old at his birth. Is this what the original source stated, or were some dates perhaps not transposed accurately?

Thanks and regards, Rickhg12hs (talk) 05:13, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Oops. Thank you. I should have seen that myself. I tend to give someone the same birth year as the spouse if unknown, just to give a rough indication of which century they belonged to. Sometimes without thinking hard enough.
I wonder how you came to notice that one. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 12:35, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
As part of a History of Science class John Harrison (1693-1776) came up and I was curious about his descendants. A google search brought me here and I just happened to notice some of the dates.
Do you know how/why his first son died so young? ... or what happened to his first wife? Rickhg12hs (talk) 14:44, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
Sorry, I have no more detail. The book I quoted from was in a public library a long way from where I now live. Maybe you can search libraries for physical or e-books. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 05:49, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
OK, thanks. I'll search around, but of all the places I've found so far, you've provided the most info about John Harrison's family. So a sincere thanks for that. Rickhg12hs (talk) 17:43, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

Kr Nath's father[]

[Deleted stuff that's now on his father's page. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 23:14, 30 October 2021 (UTC)]

One of those is enough! The proposed page seems to be mostly a direct copy of the article on Bharatpedia - which is OK. But that wiki and independent webpages call him Premtosh Debnath. What's the story there? And one site says he's "Single" - clarification there? --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 20:46, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

Pranab Kr Nath's father Premtosh Nath's application to write the article[]

OK, I will copy much of that to his page. But please answer my above questions. --- Robin Patterson (Talk) 22:49, 30 October 2021 (UTC)

Need a Bot to fix Showfacts Children[]

Hi. Is there an easy way to create a bot to edit all of the SMW pages onsite from "showfacts children" to "Showfacts children" with a capital "S"? I have found that pages with the lower case "S" will not 1) transfer children data to their spouse 2)will not properly display descendants and 3) No children lists shows in Special:Browse page properties Property:Children-list1. Many, many pages have this problem. MainTour (talk) 03:34, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

FYI - You can track the latest details on my debugging this at : MainTour/SMW Notes.MainTour (talk) 21:58, 16 April 2022 (UTC)
FYI - I've been working nearly everyday at debugging the children/siblings templates and slowly making progress. Actually I find it easier to create a new one from scratch. You can see my progress at Sandbox3 - See section "Nest4". I should have it solved in another 60 days. 13:27, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

Siblings Template Lives Again[]

I just turned on Siblings Again - Using my coding. Good example see Brigham Young (1836-1903) - who has quite a few of them. It is incomplete for finding step siblings - but I wanted to give you a visible demostration of what I have created so far. Please give feedback. MainTour (talk) 13:41, 6 May 2022 (UTC)

I am overly excited at having finally figured out how to fix these important templates. The Siblings template that I have activated is a simple one just shows all children from the Father's person profile. In next few days I will have ready an expanded Siblings template (for review before making it live) that will better show all half siblings - which brings up an important question I have.MainTour (talk) 17:13, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
Question: What is the best logical sequence for finding/displaying one's siblings: Here is my assumption of the answer:
1) First check father's profile for all direct siblings and half siblings
2) If no father exists or children data is blank - than check mother's profile for siblings and half siblings that she has listed.
3) If Father does exist with child data - then afterwards check the mother's other spouses/marriages to find more half siblings have from mother's marriages to other.

Introduction and assistance[]

Hello! I’m Héctor, a Fandom Community Manager. First of all, I would like to congratulate you for all the work you have been doing in this community. I would also like to offer our assistance with a project we run for wikis and your wiki is eligible for it. If you’re interested, we can offer to you some key informative areas about wikis and community management to help you grow this one.

To start with, once you agree we typically discuss a bit about your previous experience on Fandom. The procedure is to mention all the areas we can explore with you, and you can later select the ones you would be interested in. Let me know what you think about it. Thanks in advance! --CuBaN VeRcEttI (Contact) 08:56, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

Expanded Siblings Template Ready for Testing[]

I have expanded the Siblings template to find more half-siblings for display in a person's profile. But I have not released it yet - Is waiting for your review - The demo version is "Siblings3". Found here : Template:Siblings3 - The draft template Siblings3 is expanded as follows: 1) Search father's record for all siblings & half-siblings (same as current Siblings template) 2) If no father exist - then search mother's template for siblings and half-siblings listed there. 3) Search mother's other husbands for more half siblings from the mother.

I have three test subjects ready for review of this new & improved template:

Reminder - if you have any test subjects not showing children properly, be sure to refresh the source page using "Edit with Form" to properly declare the children data types. To me everything looks good, but I will do some more indepth testing this coming week before copying this from Siblings3 to Siblings. MainTour (talk) 03:14, 12 May 2022 (UTC)

Completed - New Showfacts Children Template[]

More Good News - I have completed an all new template Template:Showfacts children3 with the following improvements: (Again, I created this new template from scratch, because it was just too dang impossible to trace and debug the old template.)

  • Correctly shows page links for all spouses for each child - when there are multiple spouses - without duplicating spouses.
  • Correctly shows all step-children from other marriages.

You now have the chance to compare them both side by side to see improvements. I'm looking for direction on rolling this out. MainTour (talk) 23:49, 14 May 2022 (UTC)

Note: Thurstan and I are having quite a discussion on this on my talk page. MainTour (talk) 03:57, 18 May 2022 (UTC)

Finding Non-SMW people[]

It looks impossible to recreate the tool to find non-SMW people articles by user like before. But I do have this new little tool to find SMW people by Surname. MainTour (talk) 13:23, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

Sample places to run it:

Showfact Children Bugs all Fixed![]

Update-Completion: - Good News - I have finished the template bug fixes for Showfact Children, Siblings and Descendants. See my (talk page) for all details - testing samples and feedback from Thurstan. I'm just now doing some final testing before making it all go live. MainTour (talk) 03:47, 23 May 2022 (UTC)

Need Help on Showfact Children Table !!![]

Robin - We need your help/opinion on Showfacts Children! As I mentioned I've fixed almost all bugs in this SMW Template - however User:Thurstan and I have disagreement on style for the headers to display at the top of the children. He wants it the old way and I want it all caps. Please see topic #61 over at Thurstan's talk page. You are the tie breaking vote! MainTour (talk) 22:04, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

Excellent. Template update is done and posted. I'm already seeing improved results for children and descendant tables. Currently I do have to "refresh" pages like twice (beginning with the husband). Hopefully within 72 hours all pages will be updated. Send me a note if you see anything amiss! Thank you for your patience and guidance - I haven't completed a serious programming job like this in 20+ years (haha!) but boy I did sure learn alot here. MainTour (talk) 00:47, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
