Ward Nicholas Hallowell-Boylston - world traveler and philanthropist.
Biography
Ward Nicholas Hallowell-Boylston was born 22 November 1747 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States to Benjamin Hallowell (1725-1799) and Mary Boylston (1722-1795) and died 1828 Princeton, Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States of unspecified causes. He married Anne Molineux (1748-1779) 1771 in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. He married Alice Darrham (1763-1843) 26 May 1807 in Boston, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.
He was a descendent of the physician Zabdiel Boylston (1679-1766), and was a merchant, a philanthropist, and benefactor of Harvard University. He was a brother of Admiral Sir Benjamin Hallowell Carew, one of Nelson's Band of Brothers, and a nephew of Governor Moses Gill.
1770 Namechange
In 1770 at the request of his uncle Nicholas Boylston, he dropped his surname of Hallowell and changed it to his uncle's name, Boylston, who promised to leave him certain large estates in his will. His father was commissioner of the Port of Boston during the Boston Tea Party. Their loyalist background may have forced the namechange and the family had to flee New England for a number of years.
1775 Departure
In 1773, Boylston left Boston for an extended journey through Europe and Asia. In 1775 he arrived in London, living there for twenty-five years and in various aspects of trade.
