  • Minister of Ayr 1640-84

Biography

Rev. William Adair was born 1591 in Kilhilt Tower, Old Luce, Wigtownshire, Scotland, United Kingdom to William Adair (1565-1626) and Rosina Reilly McClellan (1565-1626) and died 1684 Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland, United Kingdom of unspecified causes. He married Isabel Montgomery (c1598-) 1612 .

Parents: William Adair, b. 1565, Kinhilt, Wigtown, Galloway, Scotland d. 1626, Ballymena, and Unknown Houston, b. abt 1565 in Scotland.

For 43 years William Adair had been a minister of Ayr, and he did not long survive his severance from the charge. He died in February, 1684, and was buried in the shadow of the Church which he had built "betwixt the twa laigh windowes on the east syd of the isle." All through his public life he had been noted for his gift of prayer, and the monument which marks his resting-place represents him on his knees. His character, like his career, had come through strange vicissitudes. Extreme ardour had given place to extreme caution. But it was lit up with heroism in the end. Nothing in his ministry became him like the leaving it. The following year Alexander Gregorie was transferred from St. Quivox to succeed Rev. William Adair.
