William was born in 1717. He died while serving in the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775. William served as a private in Captain Thomas Knowlton's Company, Colonel Israel Putnam's 3rd Regiment, Connecticut during the Revolutionary War. He was killed in the Battle of Bunker Hill by a chain-shot. He had only enlisted on May 1, 1775, 1 month and 16 days before he was killed. He received 30 acres of land in Pomfret, Windham County, CT from his Uncle William. William bought land in Ashford from Martha Fitch of Boston on October 6, 1746, a part of which he sold to his brother, Colonel Thomas Cheney on April 13, 1748.
