Obituary

MR. W. CORNISH.

Mr. William Cornish, a former senior inspector of Public schools, died at Hurstville yesterday, in his 79th year. A native of Balmain, he was educated at the Birchgrove School, Balmain. He joined the teaching staff of the Education Department in January, 1873, as a pupil teacher at Fort-street School. Subsequently he taught at Richmond (1877), Glen innes( 1877), Tamworth (1879), Woolloomooloo (1881), Burwood (1882), Waterloo (1887), and Glebe schools (1890). He was appointed an inspector of schools in 1900, succeeding Mr. Peter Board at Lismore. After five years he was transferred to Bowral for six years. He was then made a senior inspector at Maitland, and after four years he became senior inspector in Sydney. After 13 months' leave his service with the department terminated on January 31, 1923, 50 years after he had joined.

Mr. Cornish was one of the founders of the Balmain Electorate Cricket Club.

He is survived by Mrs. Cornish, four sons, Messrs. Herbert, Horace, Cecil, and William Cornish, and two daughters, Mrs. T. George and Mrs. A. H. Robinson. The funeral will take place at Rookwood Cemetery this afternoon.
