Biographical snippets

William FORLONG - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 1762 , , Scotland

Possibly the "spirit dealer, Gallowgate, shop No 21" in the First Glasgow Directory (1787), where there was also a James, manufacturer, Havannah. Robin has or had more listings for them from later directories and listings (even more useful - with dates of commencement and relationships) from photocopied records of the Burgesses and Guild Brethren of Glasgow.

Later snippets include Caledonian Mercury of 7 April 1814[1]:

IMPORTS. Ziemiew[spg?], from Rotterdam, with ... 10 puncheons Geneva, for William Forlong and Son ... Helen from ditto, with ... 10 pieces Geneva ... 6 hams, for William Forlong and Son

See also http://gdl.cdlr.strath.ac.uk/smihou/smihou095.htm from the Glasgow Digital Library. The notes there about ownership strongly suggest that William was not born at Wellshot (as the "of" would earlier have implied).

Agnes's wedding: http://search.findmypast.co.uk/bna/viewarticle?id=bl%2f0000183%2f18430913%2f027 shows the London Evening Standard of 13 September 1843 reporting thus:

The four sons who reached adulthood were parties to, or mentioned in, the court case Forlong v. Forlongs in 1851.

‡ General
  • This was where the Forlong line was thought to go underground below a brick wall. William's father had long been a mystery. We were not 100% sure how William was related to Rev. James Forlong/Furlong of Rutherglen, William's marriage celebrant in 1786 and ancestor of the Forlonges of Australia. Here we initially showed him as a brother just for convenience; Sir Nicholas Mander, an almost certain descendant through a hushed-up apparent illegitimacy, believes they were brothers. JANUARY 2017 free weekend at Findmypast produces a James Forlong baptised 27 May 1722 at Stirling (parents James Forlong and Isobell Campbell) and a James Forlong (quite possibly the same one but residing in Glasgow) marrying Janet Bogle on 9 Sep 1743 at "Associate Session, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland"; both of those were "Used by permission of FamilySearch Intl".
