Biography details

William Gregg was born in 1642 in Waterford, County Antrim, Ireland. He married Ann Wilkinson/Hodnut about 1666 in Ardmore, County Waterford, Ireland.

William Gregg was known as "The Immigrant Friend" and met William Penn in the lead mines of Ireland when William Penn visited Waterford, Ireland in 1678. Penn converted many Scottish-Irish settlers to the Society of Friends. William Gregg was one of those converted by Penn.

William Gregg arrived in the United States sometime after October 1682 with the Colonial Friends Group. It is thought that he made the voyage in the ship "Caledonia" with William Hoge, sailing for Pennsylvania. They arrived at Upland, now Chester, Pennsylvania, with his wife and four small children.

According to "Immigration of Irish Quakers," William and Ann came to America with the Dixon, Hollingsworth, Sharpley families who came from North Ireland. William settled on a tract of 400 acres of land in Christiana Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware, as surveyed to him on November 3, 1685.

William went down the Delaware River to Centerville between Brandywine and Red Clay Creeks. He was granted 200 acres of land in 1683 and was warranted 400 acres of land in 1684. William was known to have built a Log Cabin on a location called "Strand Milas" in 1684. He died on July 1, 1687 and was buried on his own plantation near Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware.
