William Harris Wharton was born 27 April 1802 in Virginia, United States to William Henry Wharton (1768-1816) and Judith Harris (1768-1816) and died 14 March 1839 Hempstead, Waller County, Texas, United States of unspecified causes. He married Sarah Ann Groce (1810-1858) 5 December 1827 .

Both Wharton County, Texas, and its county seat, Wharton, were named for him and his brother John Austin Wharton (1806–1838), who was likewise a statesman of the Republic of Texas.
