Obituary

WILLIAM HENRY GOSPER

One of the Hawkesbury's most popular identities, William Henry Gosper, passed away in his sleep, at his late home, North Richmond, during the early hours of Friday morning. He was known to be suffering from heart trouble, but retired to bed apparently in his usual health on Thursday.
He was 66 years of age and a son of the late William Henry Gosper, who married Miss Catherine Blundell. The subject of this notice was born at Upper Colo, and there married Miss Alvina Phipps. He lived in the Colo district most of his life, and a few years ago removed to Wheeny Creek, Kurrajong, and subsequently to North Richmond. He is survived by his wife and three sons and two daughters, viz. George, Alfred, Elsie, Nina, and Charles.
Mr. George Gosper, of Lower Portland was a brother of the deceased. The late William Henry Gosper was a very much respected man, and his sudden death was a great shock to a large circle of friends. He was a man of strict probity and one in whom the public had entire confidence.
At the inception of Local Government he was elected, in December, 1906, as one of the councillors for A Riding in Colo Shire.
There were half a dozen candidates for A Riding, and Cr. A. C. Anderson was returned at the top of the poll with 63 votes, the late Mr. Gosper coming next with 52 votes. Mr. Anderson has been returned at every election held since, but his colleague of the first election did not seek re-election after the expiration of his term.
In those days shire and municipal elections were held annually, instead of trienally as at present. On Saturday an inquiry was conducted into the cause of death by the District Coroner, Mr. J. B. Johnston, and the verdict was returned in accordance with the medical testimony, that heart disease was the cause. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, the remains being laid to rest in the Church of England Cemetery, North Richmond. Rev. E. C. Knox conducted the service and Mr. Price was undertaker.
