William Hoyt was born 5 July 1660 in Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts to John Hoyt (1638-1696) and Mary Barnes (1639-1696) and died 19 July 1728 Amesbury, Essex County, Massachusetts of unspecified causes. He married Dorothy Colby (1668-1740) 12 January 1687 in Amesbury, Essex County, Massachusetts.
Note: No burial record or grave marker has been found for William. He died in Amesbury at a time when this was likely the only public cemetery in the town, and he and his wife are likely buried here. Plans have been initiated to install a monument for him and family members at some point in the future.
William was the son of John Hoyt and Mary Barnes of Salisbury, Mass. He married in Amesbury 12 Jan 1687/8 Dorothy COLBY, b. c. 1668, living in 1740, the daughter of Samuel Colby and Elizabeth Sargent. William's will was dated 13 May 1728, and proved on 5 Aug 1728.
As a widow, Dorothy had been admitted to the church in Methuen in 1731, having likely gone there to live with one of her sons who had moved there. She left that church in 1740, according to the Hoyt genealogy (1927), but to where she went was not told.
Marriage and Family
All children were born in Amesbury, Massachusetts.
- Elizabeth, b. 15 June 1689, m. (int Amesbury 16 Dec 1710) Ephraim HUNT, b. Amesbury c. 1685, living in 1730, son of Edward Hunt and Ann Weed of Amesbury. Elizabeth and Ephraim had as many as ten children, born 1711 to c. 1735.
- Dorothy, b. 20 July 1691, d. Amesbury 28 April 1769, "in her 77th year", m. Amesbury 5 Feb 1712/3 John WELLS, b. Amesbury 9 Oct 1692, d. 1776, the son of Thomas Wells and Mary Perkins. John's will was proved 24 Dec 1776. Dorothy and John had eleven children born in Amesbury, 1713 to 1731.
- Abner, b. 25 Jan 1692/3, d. in Penacook (Concord), NH c. 1747, m. Amesbury 14 Nov 1717 Mary BLAISDEL, b. Amesbury 3 Nov 1693, living in 1755, daughter of John Blaisdel and Elizabeth Challis. The Amesbury vital record simply gives Abner's birth date as 25 Jan 1693, suggesting 1693/4 is the proper interpretation, but then this places his birth within 10 months of his next sibling, so the 1692/3 interpretation is much more palatable. The family moved from Amesbury to Penacook about 1730. Abner and Mary had seven children born from 1718 to 1732.
- Maria, b. 21 Nov 1694, m. 21 Feb 1712/3 Moses INGALLS
- Susanna, b. 20 Feb 1696/7, m. Amesbury 28 Sep 1721 (also recorded in Newbury) Richard KELLY, b. Newbury 24 Oct 1697, son of Abiel Kelly and Rebecca Davis. Various accounts give Susanna's death year as 1742 and Richard's as 1746, but without any justification.
- Philip, b. 1 April 1698, m. Methuen 5 Aug 1736 Mary LOWELL, likely the one born in Haverhill 2 Feb 1712/3, daughter of John Lowell and Mary Davis. Philip appears to have lived in Kingston, NH before moving to Methuen where he was married.
- William, b. 15 Aug 1702, m. Haverhill 1 Jan 1729/30 Katherine DAVIS, b. Haverhill 21 July 1705, the daughter of Samuel Davis and Katharine Hastings. Katherine was dismissed from the Methuen church to the Third church of Haverhill in 1746.
- Hopestill (usually just called Hope), b. 6 Sep 1704, d. Newbury 21 April 1757, m. Newbury 4 Aug 1726 Timothy PIKE, b. Salisbury 30 May 1701, d. Newburyport 14 Feb 1767, the son of Moses Pike and Susanna Worcester. Following Hope's death, Timothy m. (2) Newbury 8 Aug 1757 Sarah (KELLY) Mulliken, b. Newbury 30 April 1716, d. Newburyport 11 March 1799 in 83d year, the daughter of Jonathan Kelly and Esther/Hester Morse. Sarah had married first Samuel Mulliken, b. c. 1719, d. Newbury 4 June 1756, and buried near Sarah. Timothy was the grandson of Major Robert Pike, a man well ahead of his time in opposing the persecution of the Quakers and in voicing opposition to the Salem Witch Trials. Hope and Timothy had nine children together, the first four of whom all died in the last half of 1736. The last two children also died in childhood, so only three of the children might have survived childhood. Timothy and both of his wives are buried in the Old Hill Burying Ground in Newburyport, though the record of Hopestill's death is found only in the Newbury vital record, and not that of Newburyport.
- Meriam, b. 31 Oct 1710, m. Haverhill 9 April 1730 Richard HEATH, b. Haverhill 27 Dec 1701, the son of Bartholomew Heath and Mary Bradley/Broadley. An online account gives a death year of 1767 for Richard without justification. Meriam and Richard had seven known children born in Haverhill and/or Methuen from c. 1731 to 1746.
