Obituary

Death of an old Hay Resident

A very old and well known resident of Hay, Mr W. J. Donohoe died at his home Bank Street, on Monday, after a long period of ill-health. Mr Donohoe was the son of the late Mr Andrew Donohoe and was born at Sutton Forest sixty-four years ago. He came to Hay with his father when a lad, and had spent fifty years of his life here, being engaged for the greater part of that time assisting his father and his eldest brother, Mr James Donohoe. In the seventies, for six years, he was in partnership with his brother, James Donohoe, in the mail contract between Wagga and Balranald The brothers sold out to Messrs. Robertson, Wagner & Co. (Cobb & Co.) in 1879. After that he took up land on the Booligal road, not far from Hay, where he lived for some time. In addition to Mr James Donohoe, Messrs. Robert and Andrew Donohoe, of Hay are brothers, and Mr George Donohoe, well known in Hay and Deniliquin, is a twin brother. When the twins were young it was difficult for strangers to tell them apart. Mr W. J. Donohoe was a great lover of horses, and before he became too enfeebled through illness to engage in outdoor pursuits, he took great interest in sporting events. He could recount many interesting reminiscences of racing fixtures and racehorses. He was very much respected as a straight-goer, and he had a long list of friends, especially amongst the older residents He married Miss Beatty, of Illilawa, and his wife and family of two sons and five daughters survive him. His eldest sons are Mr Jack Donohoe, who has land in the Jerilderie district, and Mr. Greg Donohoe, of Hay His daughters are Mrs H. Hanser, Mrs George King, Mrs Geo. Baker, and the Misses Hannah and Annie Donohoe.—"Grazier."
