William Matthews was born circa 1847 in Winslow, Buckinghamshire, England, United Kingdom to Thomas Matthews (c1813-1880) and Anne Wigley (c1809-1888) and died 22 July 1909 "Monomeith", Deniliquin, New South Wales, Australia of unspecified causes. He married Jane Teasdale (c1851-1938) 1872 in Victoria, Australia.

Obituary
Mr William Matthews, expert appraiser to the Hay Land Board, died at his residence, Monomeith, Deniliquin, on Thursday, after a lengthy illness. Deceased, who was 62 years of age, leaves a widow and ten children, all of whom are grown up. A native of England, Mr Matthews arrived in Australia at the age of seven years, and after working himself up to a responsible position in a solicitor's office, resigned in order to take up a position on a Wimmera station. He was subsequently manager of Monomeith, Narrawhurett, and Tulla stations, and at one time acted as inspector and valuer for a land syndicate in Victoria.
