William Wilkerson was born in Virginia and moved to Granville County North Carolina, with his family, at an early age. In 1769 his name is listed with his father, William and his brother, Hamon on the Granville Tax list. This tax list, lists all males, by name, over the age of 16 years of age. Sense his name was not found with his father and brother on the previous, 1768 tax list, it is assumed that he turned 16 just prior to the tax census which would indicate he was born in late 1752 or early 1753. This is the cause of much controversy among researchers over his age and date of birth. Hammon Wilkerson and William Wilkinson Jr. are found in the Company of Captain Sol. American Revolution. From 1769 to about 1801 William is found on tax and land records in various Counties in North Carolina. On March 4, 1835, William Wilkerson, with his sons Davis and Hammond, applied to the United States Government for Revolutionary War veteran benefits made avaible by an Act of Congress passed June 7, 1832. He personally gave a sworn declaration of the events of his life, in particular when and where he served as a soldier. By his own statement he married his first wife at the age of about 20, 1773-1774. He was living in Granville County at the time and states that he lived there 10-15 years. He also states that he had 11 children with this first wife. At the time of the settlement of his fathers estate he was in Rowan County North Carolina where he married his second wife Jamema Franklin. By his statement he had another 10 children with her, a total of 15 sons and 6 daughters. The children with his second wife are well documented. An interesting note held by some researchers is that he used some of the same names for his children with his second wife, as he gave with his first wife. It is believed that he moved to Monroe County Indiana in the early 1830s where he remained the rest of his life. He died Aug 18 1848 and was buried on a spot that he had picked for his final resting place.
