"William de Hastings, steward to King Henry II, from whom he obtained a confirmation of all the lands which William, his grandfather, and Hugh, his father, had enjoyed in the reign of Henry I., as also Aston-Flamville and the other lands, which Robert de Limesi, Bishop of Coventry, with the consent of the chapter, and approbation of King Henry I., gave to the above mentioned Robert de Flamville. This feudal lord m. first, Margery, daughter of Roger Bigot, Earl of Norfolk, and has issue, Henry, he died issueless, and William, who became heir to his brother. He espoused, secondly, Ida, daughter of Henry, Earl of Eu, by whom he had two other sons, of which Thomas, the elder, was father of Hugh de Hastings, progenitor of the Hastings, Earl of Huntingdon. The younger son of the first marriage, and the heir upon the decease of his elder brother, in 1194, William de Hastings......"

"William de Hastings, (son of Hugh de Hastings, of Fillonghley, son of Walter de Hastings, owner of the manor of Ashele in Norfolk, and steward to King Henry I.; son of Robert de Hastings, Portgreve of Hastings, and said to be Lord of Fillonghley in Warwickshire, and steward to William the Conqueror) died in 1195, having had two wives.
His first wife was Maud, daughter of Thurstan Banaster, and widow of William Cumin, by whom he had two sons,
First, Henry, who died s.p.
Second, William de Hastings, ancestor to the Earls of Pembroke; and to those formerly seated in Elsing in Norfolk, and Fenwick in Yorkshire. This William de Hastings, who then succeeded to the estate, and was steward to King Henry II. married Margaret, daughter of Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, and by her was father of Henry, Lord Hastings, and of Ida, the wife of Stephen de Segrave.
His second wife was Ida, daughter of Henry, Earl of Ewe, by whom he had Thomas, ancestor to the Earls of Huntingdon, and to the present peer."
