According to thePeerage.com, specifically citing Cokayne's Complete Peerage, William "was created 1st Earl Marischal [Scotland] between 5 November 1457 and 4 July 1458.". Genealogics also calls him the first. However, Wikipedia's listing for Earl Marischal makes him the second, and Leigh Rayment's Peerage follows that; so do we.
