Zala is the name of an administrative county (comitatus or megye) in Hungary. It
lies in south-western Hungary. It is named after the Zala River. It shares borders with Croatia and Slovenia and the Hungarian counties Vas, Veszprém and Somogy. The capital of Zala county is Zalaegerszeg. Its area is 3784 km². Lake Balaton lies partly in the county.
In the 10th century, the Hungarian Nyék tribe occupied the region around Lake Balaton, mainly the areas what are known today Zala and Somogy counties.[1]
Sometime western territory of former county of Zala now come under on Slovenia (South-Prekmurje). In 1919 the unrecognized state of Republic of Prekmurje, what existed for just six days, was there.
