Zechariah Chafee IV was born 7 December 1885 in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, United States to Zecariah Chafee (1859-1943) and Mary Dexter Sharpe (1860-1934) and died 8 February 1957 Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States of unspecified causes. He married Bess Frank Searle (1888-1962) 20 July 1912 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
Zechariah Chafee IV was an American professor of law, judicial philosopher and civil rights advocate. Defending freedom of speech, he was described by Senator Joseph McCarthy as "dangerous" to America. Legal scholar Richard Primus called Chafee “possibly the most important First Amendment scholar of the first half of the twentieth century.
